Education Events at Castlecomer Discovery Park this Summer
Castlecomer Discovery Park will have a variety of great wildlife-themed events for young people this July and August. Summer Bug Detectives (our outdoor insect hunts), Fossil & Dinosaur Activity Sessions, and Animal Crafts for younger children, as well as our August Discovery Summer Camp week. All will be available to book online, but places are limited. All details are below! Please check in at the Visitor Centre for all events.
Our Summer Bug Detectives will provide a chance for kids to get close to the little things that scurry in the park! Our on-site ecologist will be on hand to guide the minibeast fans in your life to find the species that live in our natural habitats, and learn all about their adaptations. 11am-12pm on July 12th, 19th, 26th and August 2nd. Price is €5 per child, suitable for ages 5-12.
Those thrilled by prehistoric creatures will enjoy our Fossils & Dinosaurs which will draw from the incredible diversity of prehistoric remains found in the area. We’ll be handling real fossils and learning all about the history of prehistoric animals in Ireland and right here in Castlecomer. 11am-12pm, on July 13th, 20th, 26th and August 3rd. Price is €5 per child, suitable for ages 5-12.
Summer Bug Crafts will be suitable for younger family members, ages 4-7. We’ll have a variety of simple things to make and do, so this one is aimed at nature fans who’d like a creative morning of painting, sticking, gluing and getting messy. Parents must be at hand for help with cutting! Price is €5 per child. 11am-12pm, Fridays, July 15th, 22nd, 29th and August 5th.
Finally, there are still a few places left on our August Discovery Camp week! Four days of outdoor activities, including a mix of adventure activities and wildlife-based fun. We’ll be hitting the high ropes at the Tree Top Walk and learning how to track animals in the park, among other fun activities. A great opportunity for making new friends and learning new skills. August 11-14th, price is €100 per child, ages 8-12.
‘We’re incredibly lucky to have the natural and historical resources of the park to present to the public,’ said Cian, the park’s Education Manager. ‘Castlecomer has not only a great variety of natural resources, but also the connections to the world of palaeontology through the prehistoric creatures discovered during the 19th century. We’ll be emphasising this rich biological heritage in all our events this summer.’
